Why Shipping Matters

Lyophilized peptides are significantly more stable during shipping than reconstituted solutions, but they are not indestructible. Extended exposure to high temperatures can accelerate chemical degradation even in dried form. Humidity can compromise vial seals and introduce moisture. Mechanical shock during transit can damage lyophilized cakes, though this is primarily a cosmetic issue that rarely affects purity.

Temperature During Transit

Most lyophilized research peptides tolerate ambient temperature shipping (up to ~30°C) for periods of 3-5 days without significant degradation. However, during summer months or in hot climates, temperatures inside shipping vehicles can exceed 50°C — a range that can affect even lyophilized peptides over extended exposure.

Quality suppliers ship with insulated packaging and cold packs during warm weather. Some offer cold-chain shipping with temperature monitors for sensitive or high-value orders. If you are ordering during a heat wave, consider requesting expedited shipping to minimize transit time.

Receiving and Inspection

When your order arrives, inspect the packaging before opening the vials:

Packaging integrity: Check that insulated packaging is intact and cold packs, if included, still have some residual cooling (they don't need to be frozen, but shouldn't be hot).

Vial inspection: Examine each vial for cracks, compromised seals, or discoloration of the lyophilized cake. A white to off-white powder or cake is normal. Yellowing or browning suggests heat exposure or oxidation.

Cake appearance: An intact, porous cake indicates proper lyophilization and no moisture intrusion. A collapsed or glassy cake may indicate temperature excursions but is not necessarily an indicator of reduced purity — HPLC testing would be needed to confirm.

Immediate Storage

Upon receipt, transfer lyophilized peptides to appropriate storage as soon as possible. For immediate use (within weeks): refrigerator at 2-8°C. For longer-term storage: freezer at -20°C. Do not leave peptides sitting on a receiving dock or at room temperature for extended periods after delivery.

Documentation

Record the date received, lot numbers, and condition upon arrival in your laboratory notebook. This documentation is important for troubleshooting any future quality concerns and for maintaining chain-of-custody records for your research materials.
